SILQUE

We made Silque pillow cases due a high demand for a product that protected your hair and skin again the elements of island living. They have all of the beneficial qualities of silk pillowcases, but unlike silk our fabric is environmentally friendly and 100% vegan.

Silque pillow cases,  due to the super smooth and silky fabric, are amazing at protecting both island hair and sun dried skin, so you can spend all day in the waves, and let your hair and skin hydrate and rest at night.

  • frizz free hair
  • avoids hair breakage
  • wrinkle free protection
  •  anti-acne
  •  soft & breathable
  •  hypoallergenic

Silque pillow cases are made from an eco fabric called Lenzing, by a certified OKEO-TEX standard company ECOVERO. This fabric is made from wood pulp which is sourced from sustainably grown trees. The finish is just like Silk (without the suffering).

For every SILQUE pillow case we sell, we plant a tree in Indonesia.

A little information about silk and why we don't use it:
The farming process begins with a fecundated female moth laying between 300 and 400 eggs before dying, which then incubate for 10 days or so. Then, small caterpillars emerge, who are kept captive in boxes on layers of gauze with chopped mulberry leaves. After feeding from the leaves for about six weeks (consuming around 50,000 times their initial weight )  the so-called silkworms (although they are not technically worms, but caterpillars) attach themselves to a frame in a rearing house, and form a silk cocoon during the next three to eight days. Those who survive then pupate to become adult moths, who release an enzyme that breaks down the silk so they can emerge from the cocoon. This effectively would “spoil” the silk for the farmer as it would make it shorter, so the farmer kills the moths by boiling or heating them before they begin secreting the enzyme (this process also makes it easier to reel the threads). The thread will be further processed before it can be sold. It is estimated that 2000-3000 "silkworms" ,caterpillars, are killed to produce one pillow case.

A little more about ECOVERO LENZING:

To avoid the overexploitation of natural resources, Lenzing sources wood and dissolving wood pulp from semi-natural forests and plantations, rather than from ancient or endangered forests. By using wood, a natural and regenerative raw material, Lenzing plays an important role in replacing fossil-based products and helping mitigate climate change. Not only are Lenzing fibers sustainably sourced, they are also responsibly produced, reducing water impact, carbon emissions, energy use, and wastage. LENZING™ ECOVERO™ fibers are no exception, as they are proven to have a lower environmental impact than generic viscose, as confirmed by the Higg MSI, leaving air cleaner with up to 50% less carbon emissions. What’s more, LENZING™ ECOVERO™ cellulose fibers on their own can be naturally broken down in the environment after disposal.

Lenzing’s sustainability claims are backed by globally recognized certifications and awards, such as the EU Ecolabel for meeting high environmental standards throughout a life cycle. Its sustainability data is openly shared with customers and partners to provide further assurance on its credentials. Lenzing strives to extend this transparency to customers through brand partners by making it easier for them to make valid and true sustainability claims on their products that contain Lenzing fibers. This is enabled through the Lenzing E-branding service, a one stop service for verifying Lenzing fiber sustainability claims, fabric certification, and licensing needs, which helps support brand partners’ growth and storytelling capabilities.

In addition to being sustainable, LENZING™ ECOVERO™ fibers are created using Lenzing’s unique and patented fiber identification technology which makes them verifiable along the entire supply chain, even when incorporated into end products after long textile processing and conversion steps through the value chain. These measures improve visibility and reduce uncertainties along the supply chain, helping to protect against counterfeits and drive systemic change.
