The Journey of a Bikini: From Ocean Waste to Island Waves

Island Ethos | The Journey of a Bikini: From Ocean Waste to Island Waves

Every bikini has a story.
Ours begins deep beneath the surface, tangled in discarded fishing nets and drifting plastic waste, the very things that threaten the oceans we love most.

At Flipflop and Treacle, we believe fashion should never cost the earth. Each piece of our swimwear is born from a process of renewal — made using ECONYL® regenerated nylon and REPREVE® fabrics, both crafted from rescued ocean and landfill waste. These materials are transformed from pollution into purpose, giving discarded plastic a second life as timeless, functional swimwear.

A Circular Beginning

Fishing nets, carpet scraps, and post-consumer plastic are collected from oceans and landfills around the world, then broken down to their raw elements and rebuilt creating a premium yarn that’s as strong, soft, and long-lasting as virgin nylon, but infinitely more responsible.
This process uses no new resources and can be repeated endlessly, meaning your bikini could one day be reborn again.

We design every Flipflop and Treacle piece to last , both in quality and style. We don’t chase trends or seasons. Instead, we perfect the classics: cuts that flatter every shape, colours that never fade, and fabrics that move with your body through surf, dive, and sun.

Handmade on the Island

Each piece is made slowly and carefully by our friends, Pak Ajik and his wife Ibu Dewa, in their small home studio in Bali. Every bikini is cut and sewn by hand ,  no mass production, no fast fashion shortcuts.
This keeps our process local, ethical, and deeply personal supporting the community that inspires us every day.

Even our packaging tells a story of sustainability. Every order is delivered in a handwoven palm basket, made by villagers in rural Bali, designed to be reused, repurposed, and loved , just like your swimwear.

The Ripple Effect

With every bikini sold, we donate 20,000 rupiah to projects protecting the ocean and it's incredible creatures, including Thresher Shark Indonesia , helping provide alternative livelihoods to former shark fishermen and safeguarding these endangered species.

We see every piece of swimwear as part of a cycle one that begins with waste, transforms into something stylish and functional, and gives back to the ocean.

The Future of Fashion is Regenerated

Our journey is proof that fashion can evolve , that beauty and responsibility can coexist.
Truly Eco conscious swimwear doesn't have to cost the earth, our swimwear is no more expensive (often cheaper) than the average Bali brands who make no steps to take sustainable measures. Our bikini tops are currently 540k, and our bikini bottoms 510k.

When you choose consciously, you become part of something bigger
a movement towards cleaner oceans, ethical craftsmanship, and fashion with a purpose.
